Electric Cars Dominate Chinese Market in May 2026: 62.9% Share (2026)

Electric cars are dominating the Chinese market, with a remarkable 62.9% market share in May 2026, despite the phasing out of subsidies. This surge in popularity is largely attributed to the sharp decline in ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) sales, pushing new energy cars into the top 10 bestselling models. The data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) reveals a 22.1% Year-Over-Year decrease in car sales, with a 9.2% Month-On-Month increase, totaling 1.51 million cars sold in May 2026. However, the decline is primarily driven by ICE cars, whose market share plummeted to 37.1%, with 560,000 units sold, accounting for 82% of the Y-O-Y decrease.

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is being accelerated by fluctuations in oil prices, according to The 21st Century Economic. This shift has resulted in a 62.9% EV retail penetration rate, encompassing battery electric cars (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and range extenders (EREVs). Interestingly, the high-end EV market remains robust, with notable deliveries from Volkswagen ID. Era 9X, Nio ES8, and Geely Zeekr 9X.

The rise of electric cars has also fostered growth in joint ventures between global companies and Chinese automakers. Sales of EVs from these partnerships increased by 51% Year-Over-Year, while gasoline-powered vehicle sales decreased by 41%. This trend is further emphasized by the export volume of new energy vehicles, which accounted for a record-high 54%. BYD, in particular, set a record for overseas sales in May, with 160,644 units, constituting 42% of its total sales. Chery also made significant strides, selling 181,871 units outside China, accounting for 73.39% of its total sales.

The dominance of electric cars in China's market is a significant development, with potential implications for the global automotive industry. It raises questions about the future of ICE vehicles and the continued growth of the EV market. As the world shifts towards sustainable transportation, China's rapid adoption of electric cars could set a precedent for other countries, reshaping the automotive landscape and driving innovation in the sector.
